JMDA Supports Local Work Experience Student
In providing nearby high school students with unique product design work experience placements, JMDA are giving back to the local community and supporting the future economy by helping to prepare young people for the world of work.
Keen to support young and enthusiastic students considering a career in product design, JMDA recently had the pleasure of providing an interesting and challenging work experience placement for a student from Prince Henry’s High School in Evesham preparing for his GSCE exams.
Rob Jones, Designer at JMDA who oversaw the student’s week-long placement at the company’s headquarters near Pershore explains ‘Work experience placements are important in helping young people determine which careers they are interested in and the skills they need to get there. It is essential that local businesses create exciting work experience opportunities to help students and school leavers to make more informed choices about their future’. He adds, ‘Our student from Prince Henry’s School was very enthusiastic and inquisitive which was wonderful to observe. He was interested in learning more about the design industry and was forthcoming with questions, clearly keen to grasp an understanding of the business and the range of complex design projects the team are currently managing’.
Based with the company for a week, the school student began by learning the basics of sketching and translating innovative ideas into detailed paper sketches. He enjoyed learning the fundamentals of industrial design and using JMDA’s large collection of reference material to assist the sketching of some of his creative ideas. The student embraced the challenge of designing an innovative Copic pen holder and by the end of the week had progressed on to developing a 3D cardboard prototype model of the design along with a detailed CAD illustration that was used to create a 3D model using the company’s 3D printing facilities.
